If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in Split, Croatia and have a few days to spare, then I really recommend finding a way to the Plitvice Lakes, either by rented car, bus, train, or tour group. This National Park is absolutely stunning and you can get lost for hours traveling through the multiple lakes and waterfalls.
I had very limited time in Split so I chose to pay a little extra for a small guided tour via bus with Portal Travel Agency and it was absolutely FANTASTIC! Portal are such a great agency making the whole day completely enjoyable, with stops throughout the National Park (my favourite being the Krka Waterfalls), time spent in Sibenik and lunch of homemade cured meat, cheese and wine.
The cost of this 12 hour day trip starting at 8.30am with a collection from Split Coach Bay, or if you prefer 9am from Trogir and being treated to in depth historical information about Croatia throughout the journey by your tour guide, comes to a low cost of €56. The price is worth it just to have the ease of a no fuss, air-conditioned journey and you get to see amazing views like the Krka Waterfalls, as seen in the image above.
I was lucky enough to have Ernest as my tour guide. He is a very passionate Croatian man, making his own wine on his land as a hobby and would be happy to chat to you about it for hours. Towards the end of the day I got to sit one-on-one and have a drink with Ernest to chat a bit about ourselves. It was really lovely to be in the company of such a grounded man who is completely happy with his life and discuss my future travel plans with a man who wants to share his knowledge of his country. Ernest is a complete asset to Portal Travel Agency and I hope if you do this trip you have the pleasure of Ernest as your guide!
If you’re more adventurous, not that into tours and traveling with a group then totally hire a car to make your own way to the lakes yourself. The journey can be 2-3 hours long depending on how many stops you make along the way, but you can dictate your own time, pack lunch for the trip and split the cost of the car hire with your mates.
If you have any questions about how to get to Plitvice Lakes or guided tours with Portal Travel Agency, feel free to email me and I’ll get in touch as quickly as possible.
